Granite is the best-known igneous rock. The following is a list of rock types recognized by geologists. Dolomite: This type of rock can easily be dissolved by slightly acidic water. A pegmatite is an igneous rock , formed undergroun with interlocking crystals usually larger than 2. Most pegmatites are found in sheets of rock (dikes and veins) near large masses of igneous rocks called batholiths. If this happens undergroun the magma solidifies slowly, giving large crystals time to form. The magma becomes a hard rock , such as granite. Typically performs like granite but in some cases its composition can allow it to scratch, stain, or etch.
Overview: Quartzite, which is predominantly silica, is a hard non-foliated metamorphic rock which was originally sandstone. Crystallized at depth, granite masses are exposed at the earth’s surface by crustal movement or by the erosion of overlying rocks. If time and conditions allow, the fractionation process can continue and the intermediate rock produced during the first fractionation can fractionate into a felsic magma ( granite ), leaving behind a crystal residue more mafic than the intermediate rock.
All rocks , in fact, change slowly from one type to another, again and again. The changes form a cycle, called the rock cycle. Compositionally similar to granite with quartz, feldspar, biotite, and amphibole. Forms during regional high grade metamorphism.
