Granite trail

Granite Mountain Trail heads off to the right. After the junction, the trail narrows and becomes rockier, so watch your step as you continue hiking through quiet forest. I wish I could relive every moment of this hike again and again. After a slow mile meander up through a soft warm forest the trail forks. The trail does get a bit harder for the next mile. These trails range from to 1miles in length.


This trail travels through typical desert terrain with some large granite boulders and gravel with very little sand to navigate. It has good firm footing without the hassles of embedded rocks in the terrain like that which exists in the mountains to the south. Additionally there are artefacts relating to the quarrying of granite in Newcastle and information panels explaining more about the route.


This is a wonderful trail not only for viewing the varied wildlife of the cove, but for enjoying the multitude of wildflowers in spring and summer. On the ridge, two lookouts offer incredible views over the park area. This trail network is a favorite with kids, with steep ups and downs following the white dot trails , this short hike packs a punch.


Be sure to check out the Stairway trail and squeeze through the Grotto. Be aware, however, that you are making some concessions compared to a more traditional internal frame pack. The hike to the summit involves 5. There are several websites and even books that claim this hike is only miles round trip.
