No primer needed and it adheres very well. You can also get one or more colors to dab in. Use one as your base coat and use a sea sponge to dab the other colors. I recently painted mine and I used a regular semi-gloss paint.
The key, however, is to use at least coats of varnish over the paint to keep it nice. Kitchen surfaces are vulnerable to water damage, rough utensils and hot pots and pans on a daily basis. My husband went to the hardware store and asked the man at the paint section what to put on top of this to seal it, explaining our project to him. He (poorly) advised that we put POLYURETHANE: Clear Satin on the top.
